Beautiful lake Garda was the venue for round two of the RS Eurocup. An impressive 31 200’s made the long treck from the U.K. in the search of sunshine, wind and great nightlife and were not disappointed. The competitors may be fierce rivals on the water, but it was an act of pure cooperation that allowed the 125 RS boats to launch and retrieve on a single ramp, often with a 25 kt. on shore wind blowing. Racing began on the Monday. The breeze was quite light by Garda standards at about 12 to 15 kts. There was a port end bias to the line, which made for a tricky decision about where to start as the standard Garda upwind tactic of port tack to the right hand cliffs was best achieved from the starboard end of the line. The fleet split roughly 50/50 but the port end starters were favoured. David Giles and Fiona Clark from Weir Wood sailing club led around the windward buoy followed by Steve Dunn (later to win a beautiful coloured dress for the clanger of the week award) and Dottie Cormack from Stewartby Water. Giles broke away to win from Dunn and Ian Pickard and Lawrie Dunn from Bristol Corinthian. Race two was almost a carbon copy of the first although this time Giles, who again led around the windward buoy, struggled to keep Dunn behind him. After a close tussle Giles won from Dunn with Craig Burlton and Pippa Williams from Hayling Island third. Day two saw Garda back to normal with a 25 kt thermal wind and brilliant sunshine. This time the line had a starboard bias and the whole fleet battled for position on the committee boat end as the last seconds ticked away. Pickard led to the windward buoy followed by Burlton, Dunn and Giles. Burlton showed good downwind speed while Dunn was showing good breaststroke technique and took the lead on the next leg with Giles moving up to third. This order remained as the finishing order. With the wind getting up to 30 kts, the fleet battled up wind from another starboard end bias line. Giles and Clark hung over the windward side the longest to comfortably lead from Pickard and Hamish Calder and Severine Rees. Giles decided it was time for him to improve his breaststroke technique and left the others to battle it out. Burlton moved into second place and so the finishing order became Pickard, Burlton and Calder. Meanwhile, back on shore, the social pattern was taking shape with most competitors enjoying post race beer and free pasta at the sailing club before congregating at the “Duck” bar where one highly stressed barman tried to serve 100 thirsty sailors single-handedly. Those left standing went on to Tiffany’s nightclub until whenever, by which time only John Callaghan was left standing. Things began as normal on the Wednesday. The thermal breeze of about 20 kts arrived and another starboard tack bias line saw the fleet again fighting for position by the committee boat. Pickard led around the windward buoy followed by Giles and Calder, which remained the finishing order. It became obvious before the start of race six that the weather was changing. Storm clouds were drifting over the lake from the North fighting the thermal breeze, and the wind was dropping. The race began as the previous one, starboard end bias and an early tack onto port. Pickard led around the windward buoy followed by Giles and Burlton. Giles took the lead downwind but lost it to Mike Saul and Sophie Hartler on the second lap after they found good breeze on the left of the course. On the final beat Pickard lost out to Calder and Burlton in the steadily failing wind. On the penultimate leg the race order was established as Saul, Giles, Calder, Burlton and Pickard. Controversially the race officials abandoned the race at this point due to the failing breeze, which was to prove crucial in the final outcome of the regatta. Racing on the Thursday was held in lighter winds as the weather system from the day before was still affecting the thermal wind. The start line had a port tack bias and this proved to be the place to start. Burlton succeeded in carrying out a “port tack flyer” and led around the windward buoy from Giles and Saul. Giles took the lead on the first down wind leg only to loose it to Burlton on the second downwind leg. Burlton hung on to take the win with Giles second and Saul third. The thunderstorms gathered and this time the race officer abandoned seventh race before the start. Going into the final day Giles had a two point lead over Burlton and Pickard. Despite speculation to the contrary, the thermal breeze established itself at about 25 kts. It was back to starboard bias starts and early tacks to port. In race seven Giles led around the windward buoy but was passed by Burlton who unusually went left downwind to establish a comfortable lead which he stretched throughout the race. Meanwhile Giles was passed by Pickard to establish the top three race order. Race eight followed a similar patter, except this time Burlton lead from Pickard and Dunn and these three remained in this order until the finish. Race nine saw Giles lead around the windward buoy followed by Saul and Dunn. Saul overtook Giles on the second downwind leg but Giles retook the lead up the final beat. Giles hung on to win from Saul and Dunn. With the time limit for starting on the last day passed, race ten had to be canceled. When the maths was done Burlton and Giles were equal on 17 points each but the tie-break system gave Burlton the victory by virtue of four firsts to three and Craig Burlton and Pippa Williams deservedly became the RS 200 Eurocup Italian leg champs.
