Results / Crewsaver European Championships YC Carnac, Brittany - 30/05/2013
The Spring bank holiday week saw a good turnout of 25 RS400's make the biannual trip to Carnac in southern Brittany for the 2013 Eurocup.
Thursday morning saw the fleet arrive and rig up with the race area in the Baie de Quiberon glistening in the warm bright sunshine and force 4-5 north-westerly winds. The 400 fleet included boats from all over the country with Chris Dowie and Naomi Moran taking the prize for furthest travelled having left Aberdeen on Saturday, raced wtih the Scottish fleet over the weekend at Dalgety Bay and then made the long haul down to Poole (where they sailed on bank holiday Monday) before taking the ferry to France and finally relaunching their boat for the third time since leaving home in Carnac. The offshore breeze meant a fast spinny run down to the start line with the whole fleet revelling in conditions not seen back home for many a month. The OOD got the fleets underway promptly at 2pm with (amazingly) the fleet of only 19 200's being sensible and getting off without a recall. They and the 100's disappeared off round the trapezoidal course leaving the 400's clear to enjoy traditional windward leeward race three times round.
In race 1 Howard Farbrother and Tiny Anderton in the venerable - but soon to be updated - 1251 quickly established a decent lead but behind them there was much place changing a quite a few early baths.
By the end of the race the lighter crew of Mike and Sally Fitzpatrick had done a great job to pull through to second with Jack Holden and Ollie Miller in third. Race two saw the wind god ratchet things up a notch or two and the fleet started first time - after only one misbehave from the 200's - with the wind gusting force 5-6. Flat water and the bright sunshine gave even Simon Baker and Louise Hoskins the necessary encouragement to hike the boat out flat though and the fleet soon made it up to the windmark ready to enjoy the flast plane back downwind.
Jack and Ollie soon established an early lead with Howard down the fleet and maybe still recovering from his pre-start swim (pay more attention next time Howard!) By the end of the race, Jack and Ollie won by the proverbial country mile from Howard and Tiny pulling through on the final run into second and Roger O'Gorman and Roger Craig in 1344 in third. Ashore the fleet retired to a well-earned beer or two in the sunshine and looks forward to the great conditions forecast for the next three days.

Day 2
Day 2 dawned with much less breeze than yesterday much to the unanimous glee of the 400 fleet.
After a respectful minutes silence in memory of Bart the fleet launched into a pleasant but extremely shifty 12 knots. The usual snakes and ladders ensued as the breeze flicked left and right, one minute you looked glamour the next you were propping the fleet up.
Some usual suspects edged their way towards the front and some (Simon and Lou) banged some great corners and made them pay!
Wins went to Howard and Tiny Tim in race 3 with Mike and Sally sneaking a 2nd. In race 4 Andy and Dan had well deserved win followed home by the Irish. In the randomness of race 5 Nick and Caroline had a well deserved win with Howard and Tiny sneaking a 2nd and the unlucky Jack and Ollie 3rd after leading the race for the first laps.
So overall after 5 races, some protests and one discard in play, Howard and Tiny are clear a head of Mike and Sally who are closely followed by Nick and Caroline

Day 3
Champagne sailing conditions again here in Carnac saw the 24 strong RS 400 fleet enjoy races 6,7 and 8 in an offshore north-easterly of force 3-4 occasionally gusting up to 5.
Race six was a question of carefully picking the right shifts downwind and then reading them again upwind. Andy Hatch and Dan Hawkins handled the shifty conditions well and pulled through to take the lead at the end of the first run which they held to the end. They were, however, pushed hard to the end by a number of different crews with Emmet and James Ryan eventually pulling through to finish second and Howard Farbrother and Tiny Anderton in third.
Race seven was dominated by John Cooper and Becci Wigley in 1325 who played the shifts perfectly on the first beat and led by more than 50 yards at mark one. Although the chasing bunch closed up a bit on the run, John and Becci held on well to take the gun from Jack Holden and Ollie Miller with Mike Hart and Sally Kilpatrick third.
After a brief delay to allow the wind to settle (and the 200 fleet to misbehave again at the start) force eight was led off by Roger O'Gorman and Roger Craig with a perfect pin end start. They were never headed and by the finish an exhausted but exhilarated fleet was led in behind them by Andy and An with the Ryan brothers from Irelanf taking third - and clearly winning the day with their second, third and a fourth in race 7.
Following last night's gourmet barbecue hosted by members of YC Carnac tonight sees all the 400 fleet gathering for dinner at one of Carnac's numerous restaurants before the final two races tomorrow.
Overall after eight races and counting two discards Howard and Tiny lead with 16 points, the Ryan brothers are second on 23 and there's a three way tie for third with Mike and Sally, Jack and Ollie and Andy and Dan all on 24. So plenty left to play for!

Day 4
So with all to play for on the final day, an early start in the sunshine and the breeze was sub 10knts but still extremely shifty Jerome got us away on time and today we did the outer loop course The 1 st race had plenty of place swapping but eventually Andy and Dan found some pressure and finished first with Nick and Caroline close on their heels and Mike and Sally rounding out the top 3 Series leaders Howard and Tim were attempting to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by coming in 7th which made it very tight for top spot with only a couple of points lead going into the final race With the softening breeze and some very patchy bands coming down the track, the fleet separated across the race course for Race 2 with everyone coming to the marks at the same time but John and Becky put some distance on the fleet to take the win and the rest were left to fight for the minor platings on the final run.
Howard and Tim managed to hold off Andy and Dan to win overall, Andy and Dan finished second whilst Nick and Caroline had a good days results to pull them back to 3rd place. Thanks must go to Jerome and his team on the water for some great racing and also to YC Carnac for a superb event.
