Report - RS400 Open, Parkstone YC, 4 Nov 01
With the threat of a very slow day and mist 20 RS400's arrived at
Parkstone Yacht Club for their first RS400 Open meeting since the club
adopted the class.
Once on the water the fears of a light weather day evaporated along with
the mist. Slowly the wind filled in until by the second race gusts of 20
knots were registered on the committee boat. The only problem before the
start was catching the wind as it swung through 45. The fleet was held
while Graham Davies, PRO, competently moved the windward/leeward course
to match.
The first race got away cleanly second time once the black flag was
introduced. In a steady but shifting 1st leg F2-3 Hywel Roberts (641) got
away well with Jason Pyke (958), David Giles (1072) and Stuart Bowen
(453) chasing hard round the first mark. Bowen fell away down the run and
Jon Gorringe (1102) caught up well downwind. With only 2 laps for the
first race it was all over quickly.
1st: Roberts; 2nd Pyke; 3rd Gorringe.
The race management was very slick between races and the fleet was away
within 10 minutes of the last boat finishing. In bright sunshine and F4
the front of the fleet changed around a bit. Peter Stratton(1066) was
first at the windward mark closely pursued by Neal Freeman, Jon Gorringe,
Nick Craig (1038) and Phil Jackson (1090). Down the first of the 3 runs
Freeman lost out by capsizing, while Gorringe opened out a comfortable
lead which he held to the end.
1st: Gorringe; 2nd: Jackson; 3rd: Craig.
The final race was again 3 laps of what was turning out to be a perfect
days sailing. Another clean start in F3-4 saw Gorringe, Freeman, Jackson
and Gibbs well away and holding the left side of the course. The battle
for overall honours was wide open. Allowing for discard there were at
least 4 boats in the hunt. In the end Jackson held on for 1st in the
final race to win the meeting with Freeman 2nd and Gibbs 3rd.
Overall:
1st: Phil Jackson/Gerard Baron Parkstone YC 3pts
2nd: Jon Gorringe/Toby Lewis Parkstone YC 4pts
3rd: Russ Gibbs/Jayne Singleton Starcross YC 7pts
4th: Neal Freeman/Paul Freeman Parkstone YC 8pts
5th: Nick Craig/Dan Sanders Frensham Pond SC 8pts
