Twenty RS400s left the Jubilee Bank Holiday weather behind them and made
the trip north to Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club for a weekend of drizzly
rain and squalls. The constantly changing weather conditions and valley
sailing kept everyone on their toes and made for exciting racing with
lots of place changing at the front of the fleet.
The first race was won by David Giles and Fiona Clark who extended their
lead throughout the race from Chris Jennings and Ed Nicklin. Race two
brought a heavy squall and saw four boats black flagged at the start.
Jennings / Nicklin won from Giles / Clark with Greg OBrien and Heather
King in third. Race three saw the wind drop away to nothing on the start.
Giles and Heather Chipperfield found the wind first to lead the whole way
round, winning from Jennings / Nicklin with Giles / Clark in third.
Monday dawned with gusts of 13-14kts and some big shifts. Giles / Clark
read the shifts well to win the first two races from Jennings / Nicklin
and Dave Shiel and Chris Fillard respectively. Final race of the day saw
Jennings / Nicklin take the winners gun from OBrien / King with Phil
Jackson and Gerard Barron in third.
Tuesday brought another new wind direction with gusts of 18kts. First
race was won by Giles / Clark from Shiel / Fillard. Race two saw the wind
gusting up to 25kts. Jackson / Barron led until the final lap when they
were overtaken by Jennings / Nicklin who held on to take the winners
gun, Jackson / Barron in second and Dave Exley and Nigel Hall taking
third.
Giles / Clark won the event overall, after being tied on points with
Jennings / Nicklin, but winning with four race wins to their credit
against Jennings / Nicklins three. In the close competition for third
place overall, Shiel / Fillard were just two points ahead of OBrien /
King.
