Results / Italian Eurocup 2002 Lake Garda - 22/07/2002
A fleet of 15 RS 400s made it to the start line at Riva del Garda for
the Euro Cup Event on a shared race track with the other RS fleets. All
10 races were completed over the course of the five days with some close
and exciting racing.
Riva showed the full range of conditions for which it is famous from
howling winds to light and fluky conditions. On the plus side, the
thermal wind appeared on time every day and blew straight down the lake
just as predicted. On the minus side, the courses were heavily one
sided both up and down wind, due to the inevitable wind bend.
Day 1 began in 20 knots of wind with Robin Kenyon and Toby Lewis taking
an early lead, which they held throughout the race. Bill and Lynda
Handley, recovering from a poor start, came through to take second with
Chris and Matt Bailey third. Breaking from the port end of the line in
the second race Kenyon and Lewis again held the lead throughout. A
match race developed for second place, which was eventually won by
Steven Leask and John McCaldin with Yan Robson and Alice Johnson coming
third.
On day 2 the wind strength increased to around 25 knots. In the first
race the Handleys took the lead at the first mark and led through to the
finish. The second place went to Mark Fearnley and Chris Spicer with
Kenyon and Lewis coming in third. In the second race of the day the
Bailey boys took the lead at the first mark, which they extended for the
remainder of the race. Kenyon and Lewis held on to second with the
Handleys coming in third.
With the wind dropping to the more normal 20 knots on day 3 Leask and
McCaldin took the lead and never looked back with Kenyon and Lewis
holding off the Handleys for 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Race 6
started with a number of individual recalls and was sailed in fading
wind. The final reach of the course turned into a beat but the early
start for the 400's meant that they were the only class to get two races
in that day. The race was won by Peter Stratton and Paul Newton with
Kenyon and Lewis turning in yet another second place with Fearnley and
Spicer holding onto third from the Handleys.
Day 4 was the only light weather day with just one race completed.
Robson and Johnson came from the left to lead at the first mark but were
overtaken by Kenyon and Lewis who went on to win with Julian Smith and
Paul Browning getting third.
With conditions looking uncertain on the Friday, everything was still to
play for but, Riva returned to its solid 20 knots of wind in the
sunshine, which allowed three races to be sailed in a long days sailing.
Kenyon and Lewis won the first race from the Bailey boys in second with
Leask and McCaldin third. This was good enough to give Kenyon and Lewis
the series and they retired from racing for the day.
The 9th race of the series went to Fearnley and Spicer with the Bailey
boys putting in another second and Stratton and Newton coming third.
In the 10th and final race, with the wind still holding good, Leask and
McCaldin came through to win with Stratton and Newton second and the
Baileys recording another third place.
In the final results Robin Kenyon and Toby Lewis won on 13 points
allowing for their two discards. Bill and Lynda Handley were second on
27 points with Steven Leask and John McCaldin coming in third on 29.
