With a forecast for 6-8 knot southerly winds on the Saturday and 8-10 knots Westerly winds on the Sunday, 45 boats entered the RS Winter Championships held at Leigh & Lowton SC.
The competitors gathered for a 1.00pm start with the winds in not the best direction on the water, the RS300 fleet was set a course around the club marks whilst the asymmetrics did a windward leeward course. The RS400’s were very eager, resulting in a general recall and the rest of the day under the black flag. The final race was in a slightly improved direction but the RS300’s became the next victims of the black flag and the race was finally completed in a dying breeze with the fleets making their way back to the shore after finishing in virtually no wind at all.
Saturday evening saw the sailors enjoying a great curry from the galley followed by a quiz and the odd drink or two.
Sunday dawned with the rain coming down and a very dull outlook. However, within 30 minutes of the start of the first race, the rain had stopped, the sky was brightening and the wind settled in the west giving a beat straight up Pennington Flash, one of the best directions for sailing on this water. By the time the start gun went, the sun was out and the breeze was filling in to a strength which gave some good racing across the three fleets. Once again the RS400’s ended up with black flag starts after the Race Officer had tried to be nice by using the ‘P’ flag for the day’s racing.
The breeze held for the first two races but by the third was starting to drop away with the final stages of the last race just finishing before the wind went completely.
