Results / Gul RS400 Grand Prix Aldeburgh YC - 23/07/2011

Aldeburgh moved heaven, earth and 4 tonnes of beach to welcome the Gul circuit over the 23-24th July. The Club had prepared the beach by moving four tonnes of shingle to make launching easier.  A F3-4 NW’ly wind coming from over Aldeburgh town itself led to some interesting conditions, with an initially strong tide pushing the fleet south across the course. First race got underway with a definite advantage to the lucky few who had located the far end of the line. Howard Farbrother & Dan Martin (Queen Mary, 1251), managed to consolidate their advantage off the start line, and despite an early challenge from fellow pin end enthusiasts Stephen Fulford & new crew Paddy Daniels (Aldeburgh YC, 1111), secured the initial win from improving travellers Jack Holden & Ollie Miller (Arun YC, 1221), and James George & Izzy Mitchell (1139, QMSC), who dropped a place to 3rd when they missed the shortened course flag.

Second race kicked off with Farbrother/Martin clearing the windward mark in the lead from George/Mitchell , but a mildly problematic hoist refused to resolve itself by the QM patented method of Shout Louder, and 1139 went on to take the race by a significant margin from 1251, with Mark Hart & Mark Peak from Alton Water SC (824) in 3rd.

Third race was a more open affair, with the tide dying off, and patchy wind from the town. All five remaining boats scuffled for a lasting advantage, and coming down the last run it was anyone’s race, but Farbrother/Martin found a puff on the left hand side which brought them home, ahead of the next three boats which were locked together over the finish line, with George/Mitchell taking 2nd by less than a carbon pole from Fulford/Daniels in 3rd and the Holden/Miller Arun boat 4th by the smallest of margins.

The journey back to shore was considerably shorter for some than others, with both Queen Mary boats turning left, and mistaking every landmark on the ten mile shore for the river entrance. Some 2.5 hours later, they had counted the cranes at Felixstowe, noted the birthplace of radar, and toyed with the idea of portaging the boats across nuclear trigger testing grounds. Fortunately the Aldeburgh safety crews took pity and delivered them safely to the club, to the welcome of the rest of the fleet and the helm’s endlessly amused other halves. Money was placed behind the bar...Duckhams awaits.

Day two dawned, and it was Nature 1, Aldeburgh 0, with a single tide the beach had been rendered inoperable, and racing was re-scheduled for the river, and an entirely different style of sailing.

Race 4 and with a decent F4, local boys Richard Enock & Roland Walker (1066), (last seen floating upside-down at Travemunde some four years previously trying to replace their rudder) were determined to right some wrongs, and shot off the line to the preferred right hand side of the ripping river, they extended throughout the race, and finished a well-deserved 1st. The rest of the fleet haggled over the minor places, with Farbrother/Martin taking 2nd from locals Ian Robson and Sandy Johnson (1351), who despite checking out the tidal advantage on the wrong side of the course, had stormed their way through the fleet to take 3rd.

Race 5, started in the same fashion, with 1066 powered their way to a substantial lead, with George/Mitchell squabbling with a single-wingwanged Farbrother/Martin boat for 2nd & 3rd , until some unexpectedly gusts wiped out 1139, and flipped 1066 some 30metres from the last leeward mark, gifting the race to 1251, from Robson/Johnson, and Fulford/Daniels in 3rd. Enock/Walker  were last seen floating past trying to replace a broken rudder...

Last race of the day, and finally 1351’s admirable dedication to the left hand side of the course paid off, and Robson/Johnson grinned off into an unassailable lead. 1251 took second, and 1139 3rd place. Final results: Queen Mary boats Howard Farbrother & Dan Martin 1st, with James George & Izzy Mitchell 2nd respectively, with Ian Robson & Sandy Johnson taking 3rd place overall. Many thanks to the ever-welcoming Aldeburgh YC, and its understanding volunteer staff – onto the Nationals!
