Results / Inland Champs GWSC - 08/10/2011
42 RS400s were treated to a classic Inland Championship at Grafham
Water SC. Saturday was damp and cold however, a solid force 4 and a
good course provided all the required ingredients.
In Race 1 Paul Allen and Caroline Exley lead out of the pin end and
rounded the windward mark 1st. However, they were too conservative and
struggled to keep up with the heavier teams. Chris Jennings and Ed
Nicklin claimed a comfortable bullet followed by Allen/Exley in
second. Carl Gibbon and T Vick showed good pace gaining places
throughout the race and finishing third.
Rave two started in 20knts of breeze. In a similar pattern to race one
Allen and Exley raced the left side of the course and rounded first.
Jennings and Nicklin and Howard Farbrother and Dan Martin quickly
passed Allen and Exley. Following a delayed start due to an incident
with a Turkish terrorist James Downer's crew, Jono Price arrived in
time for race two. They used their rapid upwind pace to quickly find
the front of the fleet and were never pressured. Farbrother and Martin
finished a comfortable second followed by Jennings and Nicklin in
third.
Race 3 started in a fading breeze. Downer/Prince lead for one lap
however on the second beat those who headed into the right hand corner
missed a big shift on the left. Allen and Exley were first to spot the
shift and headed hard left, jumping from 4th to 1st and held onto the
lead till the finish. The consistent Jennings and Nicklin finished 2nd
just ahead of the chasing Wayne and Deb Fletcher in 3rd.
Overnight Allen and Exley were joint on 3 points with Jennings and
Nicklin. Following Thai curry and beer (well lager mostly as the bar
run out of bitter) the fleet woke to light winds from the south west.
By the time race one started a shift 20knts was building. Dave Exley
and Alex Flemming used their upwind speed to round first with Jennings
and Nicklin in hot pursuit. After a 2 lap battle Jennings passed Exley
and claimed first place ahead of Downer and Price in third.
Race 5 started in similar fashion with Jennings, Downer and Exley
battling at the front. In the end Jennings and Nicklin took and
comfortable win followed by Downer and Price in 2nd and Exley and
Flemming in third.
With all to play for race 6 started with Allen and Exley rounding the
windward mark first. They held off the heavier teams to take the win.
James Downer and Jono Price finished 2nd ahead of Howard Farbrother
and Dan Martin in 3rd.
Overall a great weekends racing. Visitors thanked Grafham Water SC for
their hospitality and the PRO for keeping to the tight schedule. Chris
Jennings and Ed Nicklin from Burghfield won comfortably counting 8
points with Paul Allen and Caroline Exley from Leigh & Lowton in 2nd
counting 12 points. James Downer and Jono Price from Royal Victoria YC
Finished 3rd on 15 points.
Next the 400 fleet joins the 200s at Royal St George YC for the Sprint
Trophy on 22nd October.
