Results / Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy Ullswater SC - 07/07/2012

Light winds and loads of mud (in the camping field!!) greeted the 20 RS400's that made the trip to Ullswater on the weekend of 7/8th July.
The biggest fleet for some years, 215 boats of all shapes and sizes, came to the start line for Saturdays race.  Bearing in mind that this is a huge handicap event the racing between the 400's was virtually uninterrupted with battles going on right through the fleet.
As is usual in these kind of conditions it was the Fletchers, Wayne and Deb, from Scaling Dam SC that made the early running with Fiona and Steve Tylecote from Rutland SC hanging on in second place. Hamish and Rachel Gledhill from West Riding SC were also amongst the front runners. By the time he had reached Norfolk Island Wayne appeared to have an unassailable lead. But this is the Lake District, and on the way back to the club at Howtown Corner Wayne and Hamish decided to keep to the left shore while the next few boats, the Tylecotes, Peter Snowdon, Barrie Thornton, Matt Sharman and Mike Matthews all played the middle or right hand side of the lake. It was from this direction that the wind began to build leaving Wayne and Hamish to finish a lowly 6th and 7th respectively. The Tylecote's were first 400 followed by Snowdon and Thornton.
Saturday night's entertainment included a roast beef supper, some fine ale, Caroline Whitehouse's solo effort on the dance floor and two live bands in the marquee.
Sunday dawned with not a breath of breeze. The race, shortened to half distance, started at the second attempt and under a black flag. Hamish went a minute too early and was duly disqualified. Peter Snowdon, crewed by Pippa Fletcher, started near the pin end and got into the breeze before the rest of the fleet (including the 49'ers, Musto Skiffs etc.). Just behind was Ben Robertson crewed by Roger Carter, from Royal Forth YC. Again the Tylecotes were showing great pace in the light airs and they passed Snowdon and Robertson on the run to Howtown Corner. By the finish Wayne had caught and passed both Robertson and Snowdon but the Tylecotes held on easily to take their second win. Snowdon and Robertson were judged to have dead-heated after 3 hours of racing!
