Scottish RS400s @ Aberdeen and Stonehaven - the Untouchable Robertsons
A healthy 14 RS400s arrived at Riva del Stonehaven with the promise of 12-18 knots and sunshine both days for the penultimate 2012 JP Watersports Scottish traveller. Unfortunately the breeze failed to materialise and the race officer did well to get 6 races in a light South easterly which never got much above a force 2 all weekend.
The Robertson’s in “Grumpy” dominated the racing with 5 firsts and a third to take them to a convincing win overall - with consistent starts and strong first beats they were rarely under any real pressure. 2 - 4th were closely contested between the Urquhart twins sailing “Chundership”, Rog and Stein in “Lighting board” and Martin McCrew / Keith Bedborough in “Pub Al’Occa”. The twins squeezed ahead with very consistent sailing and slightly better results to take 2nd from Wormit "A" close behind . Keith / Martin were just slightly off the pace and definitely suffering from dark and stormy Sunday morning heads when they picked up an OCS knocking themselves out of the chocolates.
Further down the fleet there was very close racing and frequent place changing in the light, tidal conditions with Taffy McGibbon and Paolo Blieezia sailing “It's all Paolo's fault” eventually emerging as the best of the rest to take a very worthwhile 5th - all that Garda training paid off ! The class welcomed new owner Richard Bolton (who made a very strong start in the après sail category) crewed by daughter Phoebe, and also Robert Yeomans / Nadia Mcminn who were on a test sail and (although they may not know it ) are now on the class hitlist for a new boat for the nationals next year. Richard brings the total number of new owners to the Scottish class since 2011 to 15 in a fleet of 43 boats overall.
The Stonehaven recipe of beers, barbeque and 2 pubs all in close proximity to the harbour again delivered an excellent Saturday social and thanks again to sponsors Stewart Brewing and DH System who did their bit to get the party started. On a more serious note the nominations flood in for the the “Stewart Browning” trophy aka the Scottish Duckhams . Phil Britton was in the running when he got lost in Hotel Volvo on Sunday morning and didn’t emerge until 10 mins before racing started – again something to do with the dark and stormies. Phil Hermiston gets a mention for actually making it back to his van rather than locking the keys in the pub this time and having to seek RS400 shaped alternative accommodation , and Oli and Laura for opting to sail a Laser 5000 rather than an RS400 on Sunday. However Paolo remains the overall leader for his Garda exploits - in particular making it all the way to Edinburgh before realising his passport was still in Aberdeen !
The final Scottish traveller is at Dalgety Bay Sailing Club on 8/9 September – what can possibly go wrong?
