RS 200 and RS 400 at Gurnard Sailing Club On Sunday July 6th, 9 visiting boats sailed across the Solent in light winds and brilliant sunshine, to join 15 local sailors for Gurnard Sailing Clubs first RS Open. After an hours postponement, the OOD, Steve Cole, sent the fleet on a 20 minute beat against the tide to the morning race area in Thorness Bay. The 400 fleet was dominated by Robin Kenyon who by lunch had 2 firsts, with Graham Deegan 2nd on 6 points and James Downer 3rd on 7. In the 200s, Ian Clayton sailed a good first beat and managed to keep Hamish Calder in 2nd to the finish, with Pete Vincent taking 3rd. In Race 2, Calder, Vincent and Jo Richards were all over the line at the start, leaving Ian Clayton to cross the finish line in first place, followed by Pete Newlands and Martin Vinson. After a late lunch, the rising tide allowed racing to resume in Gurnard Bay in a force 3 which increased to a good force 4 by the end of the day. Kenyon once again dominated the 400s winning both the 3rd and 4th races to win overall, with Paul Jennings and Mike Acton taking a 2nd and 3rd each. The first 200 race was won by Jo Richards, with Calder in 2nd followed by Newlands. Calder went on to win the last race, taking 1st overall, with Richards second place only good enough for 3rd overall behind Ian Clayton.
