Results / RS400 Racing Circuit Lee-on-the-Solent SC - 13/06/2009
Glorious sunshine greeted 29 RS400s at Lee on Solent SC for round 3 of the 2009 RS Circuit. A gentle force 1-2, an eagle eyed OOD (who was excellent all weekend) and a pushing tide resulted in several boats counting their discard in the first race. Dave Jones and Mark Hogan crossed the line in silence handing first place to Paul and Mike Allen. Mike Simms and Andrew George suffered similar disappointment handing second place to Chris and Dan Martin. Alex Fleming and Joe Hartigan were most impressed to hear their fifth place was upgraded to third.
The second race started in less breeze with Paul and Mike Allen leading out left. However they were quickly passed by Jones and Hogan who sailed over the horizon. The Martins worked their way into second place. The Allens hit the leeward mark (normally not a problem) and had to do turns just before the finishing line pushing them down several places. James Downer and John Pince recovered from a bad start to sail through the fleet into a well deserved third place.
Saturday evening's Grand RS Ball battered several crews and helms which resulted in one helm missing the first race and another crew calling in a sub off the bench!
Sunday dawned bright and breezeless. Race four started in a very gentle force two. Jones and Hogan once again headed the fleet home followed by Downer and Prince. Fleming and Hartigan added another third to their scoreline.
Race five began in a building breeze with a big tide helping boats over the start line. Eagle Eye (the race officer) popped his black flag out and the fleet responded accordingly. As per last race Jones and Hogan added a fourth bullet to their scoreline. Downer and Prince once again finished second followed by locals Neil Bevington and Steve Read in third place.
The sea breeze finally arrived for race six. A choppy first beat and a lay line helped by the tide resulted in most of the fleet overlaying. Howard Farbrother and Nathan Pinch lead from start to finish ending their weekend on a high. Downer and Prince passed the Martins to claim second place.
Dave Jones and Mark Hogan won convincingly on eight points. James Downer and Jon Prince claimed second on eleven points ahead of Mike Simms and Andrew George on twenty four points. Thanks to Lee on Solent SC for another great event. Greeting sailors with free tea and cake is the way forward!
