UK RS Southern Championships - Hayling Island Sailing Club 21/22 June 2014

This is the overall report, scroll down for the RS400 specific one

Champagne Sailing all the way!

The 250 sailors who took part in the RS Southern Championships at Hayling Island this weekend could not have asked for better conditions for an RS regatta event.  The expected wall-to-wall sunshine created a rigging scene in the dinghy park more akin to Garda in August, and the sea breeze came in on cue for the competitors briefing.  [Mental note - trust instinct and the local experts - not the wind forecast sites!].

The 7 classes - RS100, RS200, RS300, RS400, RS500, RS700 and RS800 - were taken out of the harbour and sailed 3 races in open sea conditions, providing quite a spectacle for the hordes of sunbathers on the beach.

After a Championship dinner the sailors enjoyed a party befitting the 20th anniversary year of the RS family - fabulous music from the Senators playing all the favourite covers to suit all ages from those who have been in the fleet for the full 20 years, to those that weren’t even born when RS was founded!  Some enjoyed the balmy Midsummer’s Eve watching the sun go down from the balconies of HISC, while others made it their mission to try each and every one of the many rums on offer!

As another glorious day dawned on Sunday there were rumours of no wind and postponements, but once again the wind came in as if pre-ordered, and the race teams headed by Greg Lamb and Mike Dawe again ran 3 excellent races.

Many thanks to the teams at Hayling Island Sailing Club for a superb event - we will come back soon!

Here are the overall results.  Full fleet results for this fleet below and for the orhter fleets on their RS Class website as well as the HISC Websites. Photos, thank to Richard Janulewicz soon to be added to www.Fotoboat.com

RS400 Southern Championship 21/22 June HISC

Report thanks to Jon Heissig

The RS400 Southern Area Championships at HISC started on the dot of 1305 hours on a gorgeous sunny day with a warm southerly 10 knot breeze.  It restarted about 10 minutes later after the general recall flag was lowered.  UK Class Chairman Keith Bedborough  and Martin S McCrew, down from Scotland and in a very shiny boat, sparkled off into the distance wondering how they gained such a large lead.  However, possibly due to being disorientated by the bright light / sun being a different position to usual, they had unfortunately missed the top reach of the outside loop and gone straight to the finish line to eventually record a DNF.  This left Paul and Mark Oakey to take the whistle for the first race, closely followed by Jon Gorringe and Nicki Bass then Joshua and Patrick Metcalfe.

The second race got away cleanly, with lots of place changing throughout the fleet, but Jon and Nicki were obviously remembering how to work a 400 after several years absence and cruised their way to the front by the second beat.  They held off the Oakeys downwind followed by the Metcalfes and a bunch of everyone else.

The wind increased fractionally for the final race of the day, but importantly the sun stayed out.  Jon and Nicki started at the pin end of the line and led all the way to the finish.  Another Jon and Nicky (Heissig and Griffin) were in second until the last run when the ridiculously fast downwind speed of the Oakeys took them past to the transom of the leaders.

Overnight leaders Gorringe and Bass got in an early handicap on Sunday when a pole stopper knot pulled through to give difficulties hoisting and lowering the spinnaker.  Mr Gorringe decided that even more strength would speed the manoeuvre and promptly pulled off one of the halyard blocks as well.

Waiting for the 200s to start gave plenty of time to check the 10 knot easterly wind variations, digest the food and beer from the party while dozing in the sun, and get confused about which way the tide was flowing.  After about the 200th attempt there was a cheer instead of another two hoots and it was the turn of the 400s.

It seemed a fair start line with no real advantage on either side of the course, first round was Nick Martin / Ben George ahead of the Metcalfes and the Oakeys.

Race 5 saw the return of Keith Bedborough and McCrew to the front of the fleet.  This time, in a possibly tactical move, they let Jon and Nicky ahead at the final windward mark and closely followed them across the top reach and down the outer loop run to the finish.  Jon and Nicki just pipped the ever consistent Steve Middleton and Chris Rowland to third.

Going into the final race, Jon and Nicki led overall from the Oakeys by a single point.  It was the turn of the Metcalfes to try to hold off the Oakeys speeding down the final run, and they just closed the door to on the final mark to take the win.  Howard Farbrother and Louise Hosken put on a finishing spurt to make sure that a lurid pink spinnaker got into the top three.  Meanwhile event contender Mr Gorringe was seen having an early onset senior moment and trying to round the final mark the wrong way in the very competitive pack.  He realised his mistake fairly quickly, and while unwinding himself managed some multi-tasking by using Petes Vincent and Cruickshank to push his mis-behaving pole away.
