GUL RS RACING CIRCUIT AT WEYMOUTH AND PORTLAND SAILING ACADEMY JUNE 30/JULY 1. A total of 196 boats in five classes set a new record for numbers competing at a GUL RS Racing Circuit event at Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy on June 30/July 1. This was the first event that the RS700s competed in and what a performance, 16 boats with some major hot competition, the return of some old RS friends and spectacular action downwind on Saturday. Without doubt a very successful launch of a new class by any criteria. The 196 boats were split over three courses. The fact that Race Officers David Campbell-James, Frank Newton and Richard Stevens ran three good quality races each day in a relatively short space of time speaks volumes for their race management skills and the co-ordination work of the WPSA staff. Of course no event can be a success without the help of the weather gods and were they smiling on Weymouth at the weekend!! 16-22 knots of breeze all day on Saturday from the South West with sunshine all afternoon. Full on Monty sailing, crews going yahoo downwind and a yacht dismasting for good measure; what else could a self respecting dinghy sailor want. Ah yes, beer, Saturday night featured a very large party in one of the old hangers and the video of the Lions stuffing the Wallabies!!! After all this excitement there were many relieved people when Sunday started grey but with a very gentle 5-6 knots from the west. The breeze very slowly built to 10 knots during the day and by the end there was glorious sunshine. Whilst the results showed some people had a weekend of two halves the overall winners showed their true mettle by producing consistent results across some varied conditions. With the Nationals only one month away this weekend again proved that each class has many front-runners with many crews hitting form at the right time; I for one would not like to predict who the winners will be. The GUL RS Racing Circuit is now building very nicely to a really tight finish in all classes; the last two Circuit events of the season will see some major tussles. RS400s 53 boats competed in perhaps the most open event the 400s have ever had. The standard of the fleet was shown by the fact that 24 different boats had at least one result in single figures. Coming off the water on Sunday afternoon rumour control had at least three different boats winning overall and anything approaching five top ten results was going to put a boat well into the chocolates overall Yet on Saturday night there were clear leaders. Roger Gilbert and James Stewart had put in a majestic display to score 3.1.1 showing they are the standard in breezy conditions. Chris Jennings and Ed Nicklin were not far behind with 2.3.2 whilst Mark Needler/Simon Potts continued their impressive form with 4.3.1. Jon Gorringe/Toby Lewis did not grab the headlines but were well in contention with results of 5.5.4 as was Russ Gibbs/Jayne Singleton with 8.2.8. The change of conditions on Sunday saw a dramatic change in fortunes. Gilbert and Jennings were both black flagged in the first race on Sunday, race 4. Being more careful on the start line in race 5 they were both dumped well down the fleet and struggled to finish 20th and 21st, effectively destroying their chances of winning overall. Meanwhile the Parkstone pair of Duncan Glen and Jon Gorringe along with Craig Burlton were doing themselves a lot of favours. Duncan Glen yet again proved how well he reads fleet situations by scoring 1.2; Gorringe had scored a second in the first race whilst Burlton/Bonsey yet again were giving a rock solid performance with 3.4 to go with results of 4.6 on Saturday. This set up an intriguing last race, Gorringe (discarding an 18th), Burlton, Glen (discarding a 36th), Gibbs, Needler, David Giles and Gilbert could all still win with one race to go. It paid to go right up the first beat and Peter/Jo Allam led at the first mark closely followed by Gorringe. Most of the other leading contenders were towards the front but needed Gorringe to slip back. Jon was having none of it and settled the issue by taking the lead and staying there with the Allams second, Gilbert third and Glen fourth. Gorringe thus claimed overall victory with Burlton second, Glen third and Gilbert fourth. Burlton is now leading the GUL RS Racing Circuit by a point from Gilbert. The only two boats that could now catch this pair are Gorringe and Glen but both will have to score top three overall positions in both the remaining GUL Racing Circuit events to have any hope. It of course goes without saying that Nick Craig was the fastest boat all weekend and was very unlucky not to win when he sailed to the wrong mark and the German/Belgium boats had outrageous luck on the run.
