RS400 Scottish Championship at East Lothian Yacht Club The 2005 RS400 Scottish Championship was held as part of East Lothian Yacht Club's annual regatta. A disappointing turnout reflected the pattern of the season with a number of sailors sailing less this year. The weather refused to co-operate providing mainly light, shifty winds but race officer Bill Roberts still managed to produce 6 excellent races. Race one started in a squall with a big left hand shift. Jim Sinclair & Tom Gosden led John Hookway & Alex Buglass around the windward mark, a lead they held to the finish. Race two looked to be following the same pattern with Sinclair & Gosden leading until their kite halyard jammed forcing them to sail most of the final run with only 2 sails. Hookway & Buglass led Alistair & Calum Reid round the last leeward mark. The fast closing Sinclair & Gosden recovered to within a couple of lengths of the lead but Hookway & Buglass held on to win. The third race, sailed in a cold easterly wind, developed into a match race between Sinclair & Gosden and the Reid's. It was always close but Sinclair & Gosden managed to stay ahead to win. Sunday dawned with a light southerly wind providing more headaches for the race officer. Race 4 saw big shifts up the first beat. Bruce Millar and Mark Miller lead off the start line but Sinclair & Gosden worked their way up the right of the beat and into a substantial lead that they never relinquished. The Reid's and Hookway & Buglass enjoyed a tight tussle for second with Hookway eventually edging it by a few yards. Race 5 turned into a rather processional affair with Sinclair & Gosden pulling out a healthy lead and Hookway & Buglass again managing to stay just in front of the Reid's. With the regatta won, Sinclair & Gosden headed in for lunch leaving behind them the tightest race of the weekend. Hookway & Buglass just won from the Reid's.
