RS 400 National Championships 2005 58 competitors took in the fabulous views from Abersoch beach as SCYC played host to the 2005 Gul RS400 National championships. With plenty of previous National Champions from many fleets joining the competitors it was going to be a competitive week. Day1 & 2 The wind forecast for the first 2 days didnt look promising and sure enough the best sail was on the way to the start line. In the opening day race Steve Venable/Richard Brown took the honours. In Race 2 the right paid and gains were made by those who cut their losses and ducked transoms. Louise Mackeand/Chris Bennett rounded the windward mark first and led to the finish. The fleet turned retro on the run and terms like goose wing were being used with alarming regularity! The Race officer shortened course after a lap and racing for the rest of the day was cancelled. Day 3 When racing eventually started, the wind was much better in terms of strength, but cyclonic in direction. 1st beat positioning was up and down like a fiddlers elbow as the wind shifted from side to side. 2 races were sailed and after protests were heard it turned out Mark and Sam Littlejohn had bossed the day with two bullets. Day 4 The first race got away cleanly in a shifty Force 3 with some help from Mike Budd holding down the anchor warp with his rudder, allowing some of the fleet to get over a fairly port biased line. Roberts/Sims Williams had a storming second run and jumped 10 places to lead by a huge amount, which they increased throughout the race. In the second race the right hand side of the beat paid, Venables/Brown took advantage and bagged the win. The final race commenced in about 10 knots and the fleet finally remembered starting was a competitive business with 6 boats duly black- flagged. Chris Jennings/Ed Nicklin finally found the go button leading from start to finish. With Craig/Stewart, the Littlejohns and Dave Jones/Mark Hogan the main contenders, the championship was finally coming alive and the last day promised to be a nail biter. Day 5 Surprisingly there was wind around as the sailors massed on the beach for the final day. Racing started promptly and a southerly breeze had us beating towards the St Tuds islands. Craig/Stewart got the best shifts up the first beat, motoring into the lead. Jennings/Nicklin rounded second which they held for the race with Jones/Hogan taking 3rd with some impressive light wind speed. Race 9 saw Jennings/Nicklin get their share of the luck for the week, encountering a large lift on starboard at the right hand corner. Never headed they went on to win the race by a large margin. Jones/Hogan showed some good speed again and fought with Team Burlton/Bonsey throughout the race. A dizzy fleet watched Craig/Stewart and the Littlejohns play with each other prior to Race 10. Jones/Hogan made the best of the first beat and won by a large margin. Roberts/Sims Williams finished 2nd and Massey/Lewis, undisturbed by the crew wearing the Duckhams dress around his head, finished 3rd! Overall Craig/Stewart won the Race 10 pre-start battle doing enough covering to force the Littljohns into submission and win the Championship. The Littlejohns were unfortunate as this also lost them the chance to fight for second place and they finished 3rd overall after some consistent sailing. Second overall went to Jones/Hogan who sailed an exceptional final two days. This is Nick Craigs second GUL RS400 National title in a row whilst for James Stewart it was his fourth RS400 Nationals victory. SCYC proved to be excellent hosts for the National championships, and the PRO Barry McGill turned up trumps in very testing conditions throughout the week to get all 10 races sailed. Ed Nicklin
