Gul RS400 National Championships at Mounts Bay Sailing Club � Final Day
Report
Nick Craig/James Stewart wrap up the championship with two races to
spare
Going into the final day of the Gul RS400 National championships, Nick
Craig/James Stewart held a commanding lead over Dave Jones/Mark Hogan in
second place. With three races scheduled and a good breeze forecast it
was set to be a cracking day of racing.
Race one got underway in 10 knots and the traditional post-gate-start-
wind shift seemed to be favouring the late starters, however
Craig/Stewart hung in and hit the port layline to lead at the first mark,
followed by Paul Hilliar/Stu Jagger and Steve Venebles/Rich Brown. The
leading two extended down the first run, with Venebles getting dragged
into the pack. By the end of the second downwind, second placed overall
Jones/Hogan had pulled through to third and that was the way it stayed
until the finish. The win for Craig/Stewart was enough to give them the
national championship title with an amazing two races to spare and they
promptly went in for some well deserved rest. Sally and Martin Styles
won the silver fleet and Sam Parker/Anna Ludgate the Bronze fleet.
After a short postponement, the second race started in slightly less wind
and pathfinders Rick Peacock/Ian Dobson got into the lead and sailed a
near-faultless race to win by a country mile. Behind them, Silver fleet
sailors Malcolm and Andrew Ritchie got clear early on the same shift as
peacock and held second place, followed by Sally and Martin Styles in
third as the gold fleet sailors were given a lesson from the rest of the
fleet! Chris and Matt Bailey won the Bronze fleet.
Shortly after the start of the third race, the wind died to about 5 knots
and shifted left big style. It then shifted left another 25 degrees and
built, resurrecting the hopes of many who thought they were buried.
However, Jones/Hogan still came out on top at the first mark and went on
to their third race win to cement their second place overall. The big
shifts kept coming and most of the fleet got caught out at some point but
Jon Gorringe/Toby Lewis took second, to keep them in third overall. Nick
Lowe/Elaine Marsh came in third, capping a rapidly improving
performance. Howard Farbrother/Louise Hosken won the silver fleet and
Parker/Ludgate again taking the bronze fleet.
This leaves Nick Craig/James Stewart as the national champions for the
second year in a row (third RS400 Nationals title for Nick, fifth for
James) and Dave Jones/Mark Hogan second. Jones/Hogan looked like the
most likely challengers after two race wins on day two but couldn�t match
the consistency of Craig/Stewart.
Gul RS400 National Championships - Day 4 report
Snakes and Ladders in the rain-soaked South West at the Gul RS400
Nationals today.
An early start was called to make up the lost race from Day 3, and the
fleet prepared and launched in a steady F3, only to see it drop when they
were metres from the shore. A good day not to be a Race Officer �. A
couple of gate starts were attempted, but the wind just would not play.
After a 90 minute wait, the wind at last strengthened and steadied and we
were off. It was a race to watch for shifts and gusts, have worked out
which way paid, and maintain concentration throughout. Today was Howard
Farbrother & Louise Hosken�s day. They stormed out of the gate early,
took the paying left hand side and, hanging on by their toenails in the
occasional heavy seas and wind, led the race for the first 2 of 3 laps.
Nick Lowe and Elaine Marsh, also sailing an absolute stormer, sailed past
them on the final lap, and both boats were finally taken by a hard-
working Craig/Stewart. The silver division was won easily by Martin
Brown and Dinah Holmes in 6th place, and the Bronze ringers Sam Parker
and Anna Ludgate just missed pathfinder position in 11th.
The wind dropped to nothing almost immediately that the final boat had
passed the finish line. A drift around was finally ended by the
excellent race officer, giving us all time to get in for a cream teas and
early beer.
All to play for tomorrow, still a discard to be had, and a Championship
which is most certainly not yet in the bag �..
Gul RS400 National Championships � Day three report
Nick Craig/James Stewart win the day�s only race to put them back in
the championship driving seat
The fleet arrived on time for the third day of the Gul RS400 National
championships but the wind did not! After a postponement for the wind to
complete virtually a full 180, the race officer managed to sneak one race
in, in 6-8 knots and a building sea. Things were initially looking rosy
for those starting late out of the gate but eventually the wind came back
left and Tom Halhead/Chris Bishop sneaked in front of Jon Gorringe/Toby
Lewis and Nick Craig/James Stewart.
Down the first run these three found clear wind and pulled away,
Gorringe/Lewis took the lead downwind. Also significantly, second
overall Dave Jones/Mark Hogan pulled through from mid-fleet to fourth.
Down the second run, the leading three separated and last year�s
champions Craig/Stewart took the lead, Gorringe/Lewis dropping to third.
In the final lap, Craig/Stewart extended and Gorringe/Lewis snatched
second to keep things very tight at the top of the leader board.
Andrew Freeman/Emma Jones again won the silver fleet and Chris & Matt
Bailey (aka the Brother Grimm) took the Bronze fleet prize.
Gul RS400 Nationals Day two report.
Dave Jones/Mark Hogan storm to double victory to slash the lead of
Nick Craig/James Stewart
Day two of the Gul RS400 Nationals at Mounts Bay S.C. didn�t look all
that promising wind-wise but it all came good in the end. A shifty 8
knots northerly tracked round to north-west and built to 14 knots by the
end of the day. Winners of both races from day one Nick Craig/James
Stewart looked good out of the gate start and led early on but a big
shift to the left brought Steve Middleton/Chris Rowland to the front.
On the downwind, pathfinder Dave Jones/Mark Hogan picked the best line
and extended throughout the race to win by a substantial margin. Colin
and Tony Prince came from nowhere to storm through and head the chasing
pack but eventually they were chased down. On the final lap the course
was reconfigured to account for the persistent shift and Jon
Gorringe/Toby Lewis eventually held for second place, followed by
Craig/Stewart and Middleton/Rowland.
After a postponement, the second race got underway and this time
Jones/Hogan shot out of the gate start early and crossed the fleet on the
first shift to again build a lead that would never be challenged.
Middleton/Rowland rounded the first mark chasing hard but unfortunately a
bit too close as they merrily trailed the windward mark with their
rudder. With much place changing in the shifting and building
conditions, Craig/Stewart eventually secured second, in front of Tom
Halhead/Chris Bishop and Hywel Roberts/Richard Kenyon.
After today�s results Craig/Lewis now only lead by a single point from
Jones/Hogan. Four points separate third to sixth place with
Gorringe/Lewis in the bronze position.
Today�s winners in the Silver fleet were Andrew Freeman/Emma Jones and in
the Bronze Fleet, the winners were Sam Parker/Anna Ludgate.
Gul RS400 National Championship at Mounts Bay � Day one report.
Nick Craig/James Stewart start their title defence in style
The RS400 National championship at Mounts Bay started today in a fresh 14
knot breeze. Out of the gate start in the first race, Jon Gorringe/Toby
Lewis made the most of the first shift to lead the fleet early on,
followed by defending champions Nick Craig/James Stewart and Tom
Halhead/Chris Bishop. The leading two pulled away, with Craig/Stewart
eventually winning that battle but behind them, Dave Jones/Mark Hogan
pulled through to third.
For the second race, the wind had moderated to around 12 knots and was
shifting. Halhead/Bishop came out smelling of roses and just led at the
first mark. Craig/Stewart pulled through to second on the run and then
passed to take the lead. As the leading two pulled away, places in the
chasing pack were constantly changing, with Paul Hilliar/Stu Jagger
eventually taking third from Hywel Roberts/Richard Kenyon.
After day one, Craig/Lewis lead but four points separate second to
seventh places. The championship is scheduled for 10 races and will
conclude on Thursday 24th.
