RS400 Winter Championships 1998

Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club
Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club played host to the RS400 Winter Championships over the weekend of 14 and 15 March. 16 visitors from around the country, including the Isle of Man, joined the rapidly expanding home fleet to produce an entry of 32 boats.

The forecast quiet weather was somewhat underestimated and wind of 3/4 gusting 5/6 created spectacular racing and many capsizes. Mike Budd and "Greebo" soon stamped their authority on the event and went on to produce 5 first places to take the Winter Championship title convincingly with second place going to Richard Catchpole and Dave Shiel also from the home club. The wind direction was ideal for this large inland water and long windward/leeward courses set by Race Officer Harry Budd (Mike's Dad!) were challenging.

The event was generously sponsored by Speed Sails and by Mailspeed Marine.
At Saturday evening bash the bar was drunk dry and extra supplies where brought in twice during the evening!
