The winter blues and slow start to the season due to Foot and Mouth were well and truly taken care of at Lee on Solent SC on May 12/13 with the GUL RS400 Racing Circuit event. A huge turnout of 57 RS400's was a record for a RS Racing Circuit event, combined with the other four classes there were 187 boats on the water at Lee on Solent and Stokes Bay. Whilst there may have not been the best breeze ever the near heatwave on Saturday made many feel like they were already in Como for the Eurocup event at the end of May. The numbers may have placed pressure on the dinghy park and slip way but nothing that a good club like Lee on Solent could not handle.
The wind on both days never fully settled and at times was very fickle; this combined with strong tides saw wild fluctuations in fortune and it soon became clear that a consistent set of results was going to be everything. This was also the first event of the year where all the leading boats turned up and competition was high; space at early marks was at a premium. The result was high scoring with some very well known names making a late case for call up to the England cricket team for the test against Pakistan by scoring a century.
After a delay the promised sea breeze did arrive allowing race 1 to start in a gentle 1-2. A tight battle emerged with former Albacore Champion, Duncan Glen/Tim Mitchell, making a welcome return to RS sailing after missing most of last year, opening up a healthy lead. Then controversy, winners of the previous weeks GUL RS Racing Circuit event in Scotland, Nick Craig/Keith Bedborough sailing "my crew sweeps chimneys" headed to complete the square lap to the finish taking most of the fleet with them. Chris Watts, PRO, interpreted the the course chart in a different way to most boats and making the Duncan Glen the winner. After a friendly discussion (and it was friendly even though there was a total difference of views) on the water between Pete Vincent and Chris Watts it was agreed to sail the PRO's version of the course and a very short delay was followed whilst rescue boats explained this to all competitors. .
Race 2 started in the best wind of the day. Glen repeated his performance of race 1 to win with Roger Gilbert/James Stewart second Jon Gorringe/Toby Lewis third and Carl/Julie Mayhew fourth. Race 3 followed a different pattern as the breeze slowly faded; many spotted the 200's racing inshore in more breeze and headed left on the first beat whilst the majority of boats headed up the previous favoured right side. Those going left were well clear at the first mark with the Parkstone pair of Gorringe and Glen well to the fore. National Champions Gilbert and Stewart had gone so far right they were in fact last round the first mark only after the leaders had reached the first leeward mark. Gorringe won with Glen second, Dave Shiel/Matt Atkins from Leigh and Lowtin third and Malcolm/Martin Green fourth..
This left Glen 1.1.2 and Gorringe 3.3.1 sitting pretty overnight with no other boat managing three top ten results. Mass protests were expected after the first race but with beer 1 a pint at the Club and sun shining onto the balcony everyone was far too busy enjoying themselves..
Sunday dawned with a force 2-3 from the east. With the tide now in the opposite direction going to carry the boats over the start line it was decided to switch to gate starts, a decision fully vindicated when the 200's and the 400's had six gate starts without a hitch or recall. With the tide under the boats for the windward legs it made the beats short and everything depended on judging the laylines and a clear run in on the first mark. Gilbert sailed an impressive race 4 to win from David Giles/Jared Holligan, the winners of round 1 of the GUL Racing Circuit who otherwise had a disaster at LOSSC and Mark Needler /Simon Potts. The Needler/Potts then stormed race 5 in the best breeze of the weekend, a force 3-4 with some waves, to win from Gorringe and Nick Craig..
Going into the final race Gorringe/Glen and Gilbert all had the same score with discard and all three came out of the gate early but there was much more pressure on the right. Mark and Fiona Taylor from Island Barn and Nigel/Helena Hammond from Oxford led at mark 1 with Nick Craig, the ever present Craig Burlton/Andy Bonsey and the consistent Pete Vincent/Pete Cruickshank fifth. Gorringe had managed to get over to the right early and rounded seventh with Gilbert and Glen buried. When the second beat turned into a run the Race Officer very correctly shortened course with Craig well in the lead, Burlton second, Gorringe third and Vincent fourth..
Gorringe won with an impressive display in very testing conditions, he had plenty of boat speed and looks a strong contender for the Nationals. Fellow Parkstone sailor Glen was not far behind and will be another one to watch in August. Ultra consistent Burlton and Bonsey now have the lead in the GUL RS Racing Circuit with their third overall. Gilbert and Stewart in fourth still had their speed and will not be too disappointed with their fourth. The old team of Vincent and Cruickshank were never out of the top 15 in their first sail in two seasons. Fairly new names to the front of the 400 fleet filled the next three places overall with Sally and Martyn Styles winning the merit award with 8th overall. Craig/Bedborough had a very eventful weekend, eventually finishing 9th overall even counting an OCS..
Its off to Lake Como in Italy for the GUL RS Eurocup at the end of May, so expect to see plenty of tanned faces when the Round 4 of the GUL RS Racing Circuit hits Torbay in mid June..
